HUMANSCALE SAFETYKITS ADDED TO MOMA PERMANENT COLLECTION
NEW YORK, February 1, 2007 — Humanscale’s Personal SafetyKits™ have joined the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. The Personal SafetyVest™ and Personal SafetyPac™ were initially selected by MoMA as part of its SAFE: Design Takes on Risk exhibition, which showcased more than 300 contemporary objects designed to protect body and mind from dangerous or stressful circumstances, respond to situations of emergency, ensure clarity and information, and provide a sense of comfort and security. The addition of the SafetyKits to MoMA’s permanent collection marks Humanscale’s first entry into a permanent museum collection.
The Humanscale Personal SafetyKit, a comprehensive and personalized evacuation system developed in 2002 by the Humanscale Design Studio, is designed to support a safe evacuation from an occupied building during an emergency. The wearable, body-protective Personal SafetyVest and the handheld Personal SafetyPac each contain a smoke mask, flashlight, light stick, personal alarm and preserved water. Personal SafetyKits are packaged in sealed, glow-in-the-dark plastic containers, which can be mounted under a desk or on a wall. An important component of the overall kit, the containers were designed to be customizable with critical information including floor plans, evacuation routes, and internal and external emergency phone numbers.
