HUMANSCALE DESIGN STUDIO TO UNVEIL NEW CONCEPT FOR AT-HOME COMPUTING AND LOUNGING
Daybed Workstation Brings Technology and Comfort Together for the Home Office

NEW YORK, May 2, 2007 — The Humanscale Design Studio will unveil a prototype of its new chaise lounge workstation concept for the home office at the upcoming International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The innovative concept, which teams a modern lounge chair and ottoman with an ergonomically designed laptop computer support, showcases the Studio’s strengths in human factors-related design.

Currently called “Daybed”—a formal name has not yet been adopted—the conceptual lounge-workstation performs double duty as both a piece contemporary home furniture and a home office workstation solution. Designed with total comfort in mind, Daybed may be easily adjusted to suit users of virtually any stature for light home office use, and helps to prevent the discomfort and possible injury associated with long-term use of laptop computers in unhealthy postures, such as at a coffee table or while lounging on a sofa.

Daybed’s reclining backrest keeps the upper body and spine healthy and relaxed while the attached ottoman slides upward or downward to accommodate users of different heights. Daybed’s high back curves around the user’s head to provide neck support and privacy, while built-in speakers positioned at ear height may be connected to a laptop computer or other peripheral device. While reclined, the backrest also supports the elbows, reducing stress in the arms and shoulders.

Daybed’s independent laptop tray is adjustable in both height and angle for a healthy, ergonomic work position, while a swing arm allows users to easily push the tray out of the way when it’s not in use. An integrated power strip, port replicator, and cable storage area are strategically positioned beneath a flip-up mousing surface on one side of the tray, while an extendable document tray may be slid out, as needed, from the other side. A convenient ball joint allows the entire tray to be rotated 180 degrees to accommodate both left- and right-handed users. When users are not computing, the laptop tray may be stored elsewhere and Daybed enjoyed as a beautiful and comfortable place to recline.

Designed with sustainability in mind, Daybed is intended to be made of 10% recycled materials and 95% recyclable materials, with non-fabric components constructed of aluminum, steel, and polycarbonate.
